Overview
National Initiative
|
Most Americans realize that, when push comes to shove, our government simply does not put the People's interest first. Instead, with few exceptions, the self-interest of politicians and the economic interests of their financial backers dominate the legislative agenda. This is an unavoidable, yet predictable, consequence of the structure of our representative system of government combined with human nature. More importantly, we need a Legislature of the People because, as is so eloquently stated in the Declaration of Independence, it is our natural right as human beings to engage in our own self-governance. We cannot build the foundation of a Legislature of the People on the existing, non-deliberative state Initiative and Referendum (I & R) laws. Under these laws, the initiative process is subject to the control of state governments. Legislatures and judiciaries, along with other elected and appointed government officials, media pundits, and powerful interest groups, have increasingly curtailed and criticized the People's use of their initiative power. As a result, existing I & R laws are heavily tilted toward large, organized and wealthy organizations and away from We, the People.
Finally, We, the People need to enact the National Initiative For Democracy because there is little likelihood that state legislatures or Congress will enact legislation that dilutes their powers.
